How to Use Young Living Essential Oils

Essential oils are designed to help your body by working with your body’s natural defenses mechanisms. Don’t be afraid to just go for it and experiment with the essential oils.  It takes using and becoming familiar with the different oils to find the best solution for you and your family.  Each oil has many different uses and each problem or health condition has many solutions.  Use the sample protocols and resources to become comfortable with using them and you will wonder how you ever got along without them!

Applying Tips

Rule of thumb:  To optimize an essential oil’s therapeutic benefits apply a small amount and then apply more later

For acute (new) conditions:  apply every 15 minutes until symptoms alleviate or reduced and then every few hours after that (such as cuts and scraps, burns, colds, fevers, etc.)

For chronic conditions: apply oils 2-4 times per day

Remember EO’s are very powerful, you may only need 1 drop (and in a diluted form!)

Where to Apply:  Some of the best areas are bottom’s of feet, chest, or along the spine.  Using an essential oil reference guide like The Essentials Pocket Reference or  The Quick Reference Guide for Essential Oils 2013 will explain other areas specific to oil or problem for application. For example, with tummy troubles, you apply the EO in a clockwise motion around the belly button and then work lower toward the intestines.  This follows the natural route of elimination.

How to apply:  I like the easy way of putting 1 drop EO in your palm, adding a few drops of carrier oil, rubbing my hands together and then applying to my desired area.   I also sometimes just use my fingertips to mix the EO and carrier oil in my palm and then use my finger to apply to desired area.  A roller bottle is also a great way to apply oils (find them at Abundant Health).

–0.25% dilution = 1 drop EO to 4 tsp carrier oil (6 months to 6 yrs of age, be careful when using for children under 2yrs)
—1% dilution = 1 drop EO to 1 tsp carrier oil (for pregnant women, elderly adults, skin sensitivity, and children over 6 yrs, also good when massaging over a large area)
–2% dilution = 2 drops EO to 1 tsp carrier oil (for most adults and best for daily skin care)
–3% dilution = 3 drops EO to 1 tsp carrier oil (great for temporary health issues such as in muscle injury or respiratory congestion)
–1% dilution = 6 drops EO to 1 oz carrier oil
–2% dilution = 12 drops EO to 1 oz carrier oil
–3% dilution = 15-18 drops EO to 1 oz carrier oil

–“neat” (undiluted) there are few EO’s that can be used “neat” with lavender being one of them

20/80 dilution = 1 drop EO to 4 parts carrier oil

  • 5 ml bottle (~100 drops) = 20 drops EO, fill rest of bottle with carrier oil
  • 15 ml bottle(~300 drops) = 60 drops EO, fill rest of bottle with carrier oil

  • 1 dram bottle will hold 3.5 ml
  • 5/8 dram bottle will hold a little over 2 ml
  • 1/8 oz = 3.75 ml
  • 1/4 oz = 7.5 ml = 2 drams
  • 20 drops EO = 1 ml
  • 1 tsp = 5 ml = 100 drops
  • 3 tsp = 1 tbsp = 1/2 oz = 4 drams = 15 ml = 300 drops
  • 6 tsp = 2 tbsp = 1 oz = 30 ml = 600 drops
